Everything You Need To Know About Dental Emergencies | Connecticut Family Dental
Dr. Tulasi Vikram, DDS · Connecticut Family Dental
When is it a true dental emergency?
When you are unable to open your mouth, when you wake up with swelling that limits how you move your mouth, or when you wake up with a pounding pain, the kind that feels like someone is banging on your head. Those are some of the situations where it is time to see your dentist.
What are the types of dental emergencies?
It could be as simple as a broken tooth or a cut on the lip: call your dentist. It could be as painful as a pounding toothache: call us right away. Most importantly, we all want to avoid these situations, so see your dentist regularly.
Should I see the dentist or go to the emergency room?
Always call your dentist first to see if it can be handled in the office. If we are not reachable, on weekends or when Dr. Tulasi Vikram is away, check with your insurance for an emergency dentist nearby, or leave us a voicemail. We always check our voicemails and call patients back. If none of that is possible, for example at midnight when we cannot be reached, that is when to visit the emergency room.
When do I need an emergency dental extraction?
It is very situational. The dentist has to evaluate whether the tooth can be saved, or whether it is broken beyond repair and needs immediate attention. Some patients choose not to save a tooth, which we do not recommend: every tooth is important, just like every finger. An examination is needed to judge the outlook for the tooth.
When do I need a root canal?
Ask yourself: is the tooth keeping you up at night? How long has it been hurting? Does hot or cold bother it? A dental exam, x-rays, and a few tests are still needed to tell a deep cavity apart from a tooth that truly needs a root canal, and to give you a final diagnosis.
Do you offer same-day care?
Same-day care is definitely possible, depending on our availability. We do our best to see patients with dental emergencies as quickly as we can. We are just a phone call away, so please do not hesitate to call.
Can I schedule late-hour appointments?
Yes. We are open Monday to Wednesday 9am to 5pm, and Thursday 10am to 6pm for later appointments. We also see patients on select Saturday mornings.
How do I reach the office in an emergency?
Call Connecticut Family Dental at (203) 574-2725 and we will help you right away. Outside office hours, leave us a voicemail.

For years, he lived with daily tooth pain, sore gums, and the constant worry that came with failing teeth. Smiling felt uncomfortable, eating many of his favorite foods was nearly impossible, and years of negative dental experiences left him anxious about every appointment.
For years, Kelsey struggled with severe dental issues that affected every aspect of her life. Eating became painful, she lost a significant amount of weight because she couldn't enjoy food, and she found herself hiding behind her smile. More than just confidence, it impacted her self-worth and prevented her from fully expressing herself.
